Lawn diseases: patches, rings and spots

Most lawn disease starts with conditions: humidity, wet leaves overnight, poor drainage. Match the symptoms first, then fix the conditions.

Brown patch

Rhizoctonia solani

A fungal disease that causes circular brown patches, often with a darker "smoke ring" edge, in mild, humid weather in spring and autumn.

Symptoms

  • Circular patches from about 5 cm up to a metre across
  • A dark, smoky-looking ring at the edge of the patch, especially early in the morning
  • Leaves that look water-soaked before turning dark brown

Fairy rings

Many fungi (Basidiomycetes)

Rings or arcs of darker, faster-growing grass, sometimes with mushrooms or a ring of dead grass, caused by fungi breaking down organic matter in the soil.

Symptoms

  • Circular or arc-shaped bands of darker green, faster-growing grass
  • Sometimes a ring of dead or dry grass inside the green band
  • Mushrooms or toadstools appearing in a ring after rain
