Lawn care in Brisbane

Brisbane has a subtropical climate: hot, humid summers with storms, and mild, mostly dry winters. Warm-season lawns grow for most of the year, so the lawn year starts early in spring and runs late into autumn.

Short answer

Brisbane lawns grow for most of the year in a subtropical climate of hot, humid, stormy summers and mild, drier winters. Feed from early spring while the lawn is growing, apply a winter grass pre-emergent in autumn, watch for lawn grubs in spring and armyworm through summer, and water to the weather, using Seqwater's and Urban Utilities' water-wise advice.

Brisbane lawns have a long growing season. That’s good news for recovery, because damage from wear, grubs or a scalping grows out quickly in the warm months. It also means weeds, pests and disease get a long season, so timing matters.

The biggest Brisbane lawn jobs are:

  • An autumn pre-emergent for winter grass, applied before it germinates as the weather cools.
  • Watching for lawn grubs from spring into early summer, and armyworm through summer.
  • Watering to the weather. Summer storms can do the watering for you; dry spells in late winter and spring often need more help than people expect.

Brisbane’s water supply comes through Seqwater, with water and sewerage services for households delivered by Urban Utilities. Check current water-saving rules and advice from Seqwater and Urban Utilities before you plan watering or install irrigation.

Climate

  • Hot, humid summers, when most of the year's rain falls, often in storms. Bureau of Meteorology long-term averages for Brisbane show a mean January maximum of about 30 °C.
  • Mild, drier winters, with a mean July maximum of about 22 °C. Rain is lowest from July to September.
  • A long growing season for warm-season grasses, which slow down rather than stop in winter.

Best grass types for Brisbane

Buffalo

A common choice for family yards. Handles some shade better than couch or kikuyu, but check every herbicide label lists buffalo.

Zoysia

Dense and slow-growing, so it needs less mowing once established.

Couch

Suits full-sun lawns and heavy wear, and recovers quickly in the warm months.

Kikuyu

Fast-growing and hard-wearing in full sun, but it needs frequent mowing and edging.

The lawn year in Brisbane

Spring

Lawns wake early, often by late winter. Feed once growth starts, treat bindii before it forms burrs, and check your sprinklers before summer.

Summer

Storm season. Water deeply when it's dry and skip it after good rain. Mow often, and watch for lawn grubs and armyworm.

Autumn

Apply a pre-emergent for winter grass before it germinates, and give a final feed while the lawn is still growing.

Winter

Growth slows. Mow less often, treat winter weeds while they're small, and service the mower.

Pests and diseases to watch

Lawn grubs are most active from spring into early summer, and armyworm through summer into autumn. Humid spells favour fungal disease, so water in the morning and avoid overwatering.
