Turf and Seed Calculator
How much turf to order with an allowance for cutting, or how much seed to buy from the sowing rate on the bag.
Turf to order
Enter the area.
How it works
Turf is sold by the square metre and seed by weight. This calculator turns your lawn area into an order, with an allowance for cutting around edges and beds.
Worked example
A 50 m² area with 5% extra for cutting around edges needs 52.5 m² of turf. If your supplier's pieces are 1 m² each, order 53. For seed, a 100 m² repair at a bag rate of 20 g per m² needs 2 kg (the 20 g figure only illustrates the maths: use the rate on your seed bag).
What you enter
- Area in m²
- Extra for cutting (%)
- Turf piece size in m² from your supplier
- Sowing rate in g per m² from the seed bag
What you get
- Square metres of turf and number of pieces
- Kilograms of seed
Assumptions
- Turf piece sizes vary between suppliers.
- Sowing rates vary between seed types; always use the rate on the bag.
Questions
How much extra turf should I allow?
Simple rectangles need little extra. Curved edges and lots of cutting need more. Ask your supplier what they recommend for your layout.
