State guide

Lawn care in Tasmania

Tasmania has the coolest climate of any Australian state, with mild summers, cool to cold winters and rain spread through the year. Warm-season lawn grasses have a short growing season here, so many Tasmanian lawns are cool-season grasses.

Short answer

Tasmania's mild summers and cool winters give warm-season grasses only a short growing season, so many lawns are cool-season grasses. Feed only while your lawn is actively growing, prevent winter grass in autumn, mow higher in shade and keep fallen leaves off, and water in dry summer spells within TasWater's restriction guidelines. Use the cool and highland zone on the Lawn Calendar.

Tasmania is the coolest place in Australia to grow a lawn, and that changes the approach. Warm-season grasses such as buffalo, couch, kikuyu and zoysia grow strongly for only a short part of the year, so many Tasmanian lawns are cool-season grasses that stay greener through the cooler months and grow most in autumn and spring.

The LawnMan Lawn Library currently covers warm-season grasses, so grass advice for Tasmania is limited. [CONFIRM: add cool-season grass types to the Lawn Library] [CONFIRM: reviewer to confirm best grass types for Tasmania]

Across the state:

  • Feed only while your lawn is actively growing.
  • Prevent winter grass with an autumn pre-emergent, before it germinates.
  • Check TasWater’s restriction guidelines, which show restriction levels and a map of any current restrictions by supply area, before you water or set a timer.
  • Dispose of old chemicals at household hazardous waste collections, such as TasWaste South’s in the south. [CONFIRM: add household chemical disposal links for northern and north-western Tasmania]

Conditions vary a lot across the state. [CONFIRM: reviewer to confirm Tasmanian climate notes, weed timing and pest timing]
