Lawn care in Hobart

Hobart has mild summers and cool winters, with rain spread through the year. It's at the cool end of where warm-season lawn grasses grow, so many Hobart lawns are cool-season grasses, and the warm-season growing season is short.

Short answer

Hobart has mild summers and cool winters, so warm-season grasses grow for only a short season and many lawns are cool-season grasses. Feed only when your lawn is actively growing, apply a winter grass pre-emergent in autumn, mow higher in shade, and water in dry summer spells within TasWater's current restriction guidelines. Check the Lawn Calendar for your postcode.

Hobart is one of the coolest Australian capitals for growing a lawn. Summers are mild rather than hot, and warm-season grasses such as buffalo, couch, kikuyu and zoysia only grow strongly for a short part of the year. That’s why many Hobart lawns are cool-season grasses, such as fescues and ryegrass, which stay greener through the cooler months and grow most in autumn and spring.

The LawnMan Lawn Library currently covers warm-season grasses, so the grass advice on this page is limited. [CONFIRM: add cool-season grass types to the Lawn Library] [CONFIRM: reviewer to confirm best grass types for Hobart]

Whatever grass you have, the main Hobart lawn jobs are:

  • Feeding only while the lawn is actively growing. Fertiliser on a lawn that isn’t growing is mostly wasted, and some can wash away in rain.
  • An autumn pre-emergent for winter grass, applied before it germinates.
  • Watering in dry summer spells. TasWater publishes restriction levels for each supply area and a map of any current restrictions. Check before you water or set a timer.
  • Managing shade and moisture. Cool, damp conditions in shaded areas thin a lawn quickly. Mow shaded areas higher and keep fallen leaves off.

TasWaste South runs household hazardous waste collection days for unwanted garden chemicals in southern Tasmania. See the storing and disposing of lawn chemicals guide.

The lawn year in Hobart

Spring

Lawns wake up slowly as the soil warms. Feed once growth is strong, check sprinklers before summer, and dig out weeds while they're small.

Summer

The main growing season for warm-season grasses. Water deeply in dry spells within TasWater's guidelines, and mow often enough that you never take off more than a third of the leaf.

Autumn

Apply a winter grass pre-emergent before it germinates, and give a final feed early while the lawn is still growing.

Winter

Growth is slow or stopped. Mow only when needed, keep off frosty or waterlogged lawn, and rake leaves off shaded areas.
